The maths

30 January 2006 - 02:45 pm

As I have said before, typeset math is a beauty. Someone took me up on it.

And you can buy equations too. But better to save your money and install LaTeX. Then you can do it yourself.

I wonder if espn.com is reading this

The problem with Havoc

27 January 2006 - 09:47 am

The problem with Havoc is not that it is just a mess. The problem is that it is a mess of stereotypes. It is uninspired and devoid of novelty. Whom do we have?

  • OG pretending rich girl, moderately self-aware of what she is doing, knows it’s an act, but then she is good at acting, probably from a dysfunctional home. Check.
  • Her friend, crazier seeming, but in reality just too dumb to know better, will eventually be the one to get into real trouble, causing our heroine (OG) to come to her senses. Check.
  • OG’s boyfriend, probably reminds you of Federline, likely to do something really stupid before realizing the error of his ways. Check.
  • His friend, foil to OG’s friend, also crazier/dumber, unlikely to realize the error of his ways. Check.
  • Geeky outsider with whom they are friends with despite the total impossibility of such a situation ever arising, likely to be found making a documentary about them to “understand” why they are so bored with their upper-class lives that they have invent new personnas and appropriate other cultures, but not realizing that the sole purpose is being able to associate with the cool kids. Check.
  • One set of parents (and only one set) who don’t have a clue. Check.
  • Sensitive real gangster/drug dealer (here, both), strangely befriends OG, shows her that there is a human side of everything (yes Virginia, gangsters do go to christenings), inevitably will be let down by OG and arrested. Check.
  • Real gangster’s more wary brother/friend (here, the former), senses that OG is no good, will try to exact revenge because that is the way of the street. Check.

Good then - everyone is here. Let’s make a movie. Oh yeah, and we’ll put Anne Hathaway in a “daring” role to get some cheap press.

Times were rough

26 January 2006 - 04:06 pm

For some reason (still unknown to me), my flash player (i.e., the flash player formerly known as Macromedia) stopped playing sound about a week ago. My ifilm fell silent. Youtube and google video, both impotent.

Online help was typically helpless. Yes, I have the volume turned up. Yes, I have upgraded since Netscape 2.0. Two emails to tech support revealed the source of my problems. An obscure setting in the Audio MIDI controller (bet you didn’t even know that OS X had one of those).

Now why wouldn’t they put this little nugget of information online? Beyond me.

It’s a little egotistical if you ask me

Encyclical, per Pius XII:
But if the Supreme Pontiffs in their acts, after due consideration, express an opinion on a hitherto controversial matter, it is clear to all that this matter, according to the mind and will of the same Pontiffs, cannot any longer be considered a question of free discussion among theologians.
